Today Como 1907 played against RC Lens in a Champions League match that many would probably not have looked at. Although Como, managed by another Spanish genius manager, Cesc Fabregas, has been one of the most exciting surprise sides in the CL this season, and were probably favourites against the French side, what happened was totally unexpected. Como defeated the home side 1-9, in what is the biggest score in Champions League history. Although Lens had a penalty call overturned early on in the match (in my view correctly, one of those involuntary handballs that should never be called but are too often), it was really total dominance by the Italian side, for whom the Greek striker Anastasios Douvikas scored three goals, with captain Lucas Da Cunha and the elegant Argentine midfielder, Nico Paz, also netting some of the many goals. The last goal was by the only 18-year old Italian Matteo Papaccioli, on his first match for the senior side, and hopefully the start of a great career.
Como are an exciting side, and no matter what happens for them in the tournament, they have already written themselves into the CL history books.
